High-speed rail is generally a stupid waste of money. It's no wonder the Chinese are building so much of it (they have a lot of money to waste).

Haven't you learned anything from world war II???? Better not allow a high speed gap. But of course, Murricans are high speed freeloaders, after all Yurpeens invest much more in train stuff. Bah.

            Honestly?

            1) Near-saturated highways
            2) Rising oil prices (with which we can leverage current construction costs)
            3) Pollution
            4) Ability for businesspeople to work on their trip
            5) The fact that high-speed rail is already profitable in less crowded corridors than the projected American ones

All irrelevant. Your filosofy degree sure didn't teach you any critical thinking skills.

This would be relevant, if true. Please provide evidence. Assume that the Boston-DC corridor is off the list of "projected American ones", since very few people think future profitability is the problem with high-speed rail in that corridor.

                Yeah. Your turn, say something.

"Very few people", except this is the main Republican spin over the issue.

Obama's high-speed rail plan extended far beyond the Boston-DC corridor.

a White House proposal to spend $53 billion over six years to create a national high-speed rail network that would eventually be within reach of 80 percent of the U.S. population.

So what was the Republican plan for the NEC corridor during the Bush era?

                    What is it now?

Hopefully you do understand that generally in transportation, it's the investment that drives the opportunities, not the other way around...

There is no good plan for the NEC corridor; the Acela isn't particularly fast, but you can't go any faster without building a true high-speed rail line that probably would be prohibitively expensive and involve heavy-handed use of eminent domain.

These issues don't seem nearly so simple when one takes the time to learn about the details, but you must not have time to do that with to all the important filosofizing you do...

The wonderful thing about planes is that they don't require very much road. Just like a mile or two where you want to take off and where you want to land. High speed rail only makes sense when you have a fairly linear corridor of extremely densely populated areas, so basically the Boston-Washington route is the only practical one in the US.

Also, if people stop using plane routes as often, you don't have a massively expensive train track to maintain. You just fly the planes more or less to each area depending on supply and demand. Honestly, air travel makes so much more sense than train travel you might even think there's a logical reason for there being more passenger air travel than train travel in the US...

The Acela is already a bit faster than airplanes when you take into account time spent in security. It's not worth it to build another train track.

That makes no sense, HC. In fact, I'd say that the reverse is true.

No **** Sherlock? High-speed rail is hard to implement and expensive????

                                WOW!!!!!!!

Let's increase highway traffic, here's a better solution.

What makes you think that the opportunities created elsewhere would not appear in America?
