Even at their peak I couldn't stand the look of the things...ghastly, ugly phones.

I have a Nokia xpress music phone, but then I am a third worlder, and all I wanted was an mp3 player with a phone attached. I am so third worlder that the only thing I would want to add to my phone is an am radio.
Perhaps Nokia could specialize in phones for third world markets, that model is quite popular in Argentina.
They've had phones with MP3 players and built in AM/FM radios for around 10 years now.

Oerdin, as far as I know, the only mobile phones with AM Radio are sold in India, and from the reviews I read a year ago, it was not very good or worth importing.

Why would you want to buy something that lasts a long time when you can cheaply replace it with something much better in just a few years?
i can think of many valid reasons. if you're talking about things in general, then there are many things where there is unlikely to be any real improvement in their design or additional features. for example if i buy a pair of socks, i don't expect that any product that may appear is going to perform the function of a pair of socks "much better", however much time passes. so i want a product which performs its function well and is durable enough to last a long time.
if you're talking just about phones then maybe you are happy with just making phonecalls/sms. or you would prefer to consume less resources, or...etc.

Yeah but if that comes at the cost of having phones with basic/current features stop working after 3 years out of planned obsolescence, why the hell would you want that?
