I think I see what some of you were talking about with Molly Bloom. I've noticed he just brings up relatively obscure factoids with marginal relevance. Reminds me of being a little kid and knowing about something obscure and trying to bring it up in class though it has only the slightest connection to the topic at hand, just to make myself look smart.
And before gribbler or someone says 'Everyone knows about the Zanj revolt'... yes, a 9th century revolt in the Abbasid caliphate is not obscure.

Yeah. Pity the boy who cried culturally obscure wolf. And Molly selected that specifically as an example of imperialism by Arabs/Muslims, ie Alby's heritage. It's not really Molly's fault that nobody in the Arab/Muslim world has been powerful enough to be really imperialistic for the past, oh, three centuries or so, something like that. I'm not sure when exactly the Ottomans switched over into terminal passivity, since my history classes were weak on the history of persons of a brown persuasion. I guess Molly could have brought up the Armenian I-can't-believe-it's-not-genocide, but those were Turks, after all. He might have been looking for specifically Arab imperialism...which died off not too long after Greek imperialism.

The Zanj Revolt occurred in southern Iraq, anyway. It's not like it happened in Zanzibar or something. I don't see how you would characterize that as a revolt against colonialism. Would Molly Bloom characterize the Servile Wars as colonial wars?
And the date you're looking for with regards to Ottoman passivity is September 11, 1683 (Battle of Vienna). September 11, 1697 (Battle of Zenta) is also possible. Hmmm...
