Umm... Sava described the British as a disease infestation. I noted that that infestation spread across the globe (as infestations do) in the form of British colonialism. Sounds relevant as a snide comment."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi

Sorry, but how is the last step more irrelevant than the previous ones? You're a hypocrite. This thread is about the British being ugly so please stop polluting it.

Fair enough. They merely traded in, and often abused, black slaves on a vast scale. Whether Islam's push into Africa can be characterized as "colonialism" is a separate matter. I'm not a historian, nor very knowledgeable about history. But I think the point Molly was trying to make (and I say this as someone who has criticized Molly for showing off, more than once) was that Arabs were ruthlessly expanding their power and treating other races like crap long before Britain came on the scene. Look at the saqaliba; one half of your ancestry made slave soldiers out of the other half.Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostThe Zanj Revolt occurred in southern Iraq, anyway. It's not like it happened in Zanzibar or something. I don't see how you would characterize that as a revolt against colonialism. Would Molly Bloom characterize the Servile Wars as colonial wars?

True. The Arabs were doing it while the British were running around naked with blue paint over their bodies.Originally posted by Elok View PostFair enough. Though I doubt there were many Lithuanians taken. Lithuania is pretty far north and Slavic slaves usually came from Bulgaria and the Balkans."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Okay, now you sound almost proud of it: "Yeah, we were murderous bastards FIRST! Ahead of the curve on atrocities!"Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostTrue. The Arabs were doing it while the British were running around naked with blue paint over their bodies.

Yeah, and I don't know if any of your Arab ancestors were ever in a position to own slaves either.Though I doubt there were many Lithuanians taken. Lithuania is pretty far north and Slavic slaves usually came from Bulgaria and the Balkans.

My grandmother was a Touqan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touqan). Arab families are huge, though, so that may not mean much.Originally posted by Elok View PostYeah, and I don't know if any of your Arab ancestors were ever in a position to own slaves either.Last edited by Al B. No, but I have two questions:

 1. Was her name Samira?
 2. In Arabic, does the family name come first?

Was your grandmother Touqan Sam? Because that would be so rad.

Actually I got my family history wrong. My grandmother (the one I posted a picture of in the other thread) was the Touqan, not my great-grandmother."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

No, I just know that naming conventions vary broadly throughout the world. I imagine there's some correlation with the degree to which a given society values individualism as opposed to social cohesion; the three societies you mentioned all traditionally place heavy emphasis on the family, order and performing one's role/duties.

Blah blah blah...Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostI think I see what some of you were talking about with Molly Bloom. I've noticed he just brings up relatively obscure factoids with marginal relevance.

Oh look, someone's just mentioned his Arab ancestry again. Oh look, someone's drivelling on about the nasty European colonial powers.

Oh look, someone's forgotten the world's second successful slave revolt.

Reminds me of being a little kid and knowing about something obscure and trying to bring it up in class though it has only the slightest connection to the topic at hand, just to make myself look smart.

And ? It would have been hard for them to revolt on the island of Zanzibar since they'd been captured and transported to work in Mesopotamia.Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostThe Zanj Revolt occurred in southern Iraq, anyway.

They were slaves brought from Africa, by imperialist colonizers.

It was a successful slave revolt. Get the relevance ?

So you keep saying. So what ? Does anyone but you care ?I am also half Lithuanian, by the way.Vive la liberte. Noor Inayat Khan, Dachau.

I'm surprised you think the world's second successful slave revolt is trivial. What about the rest of black history or Arab history or Muslim history ? How much of that is trivial too ?Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostI think Molly Bloom is trying to be a show-off with his trivia.

'Trying' ?Are you trying to prove that British schools are superior or something...?
