        • I have the cables running to the utility room where I've them hooked up to a switch. No patch panel.

I'm always impressed at the quality of pictures some of those older Canons can produce.

Especially with fiber, that is a bad idea, due to connector fragility. Also with patch panels you can have lines to every room but not get an enormous switch, by connecting the drops in the rooms that computers are located in to ports on your switch with patch cables at the panel.

I'm guessing in that case you only have a small number of drops in your house, given that the switch appears to be fairly small.

              • There's 8 gigabit drops. The fibre is currently unterminated.

                • Nice.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                        • We're not going to even do it until Summer 2013, so haven't given too much thought yet. The backyard will have a large patio with seating and a (natural gas) firepit, though. That's as far as we've thought.

We're waiting for a full year of the freeze/thaw cycle for the ground to settle before spending any money on it.

                          • It's funny how close to each other the houses are, given the vastness of Canada.

Also, what is this? Fountain effect when it rains?

The country is vast, but the number of major cities is not.

I'm assuming you're referring to the downspout. It's left up unless there's expected to be a major downpour/melt. It'd funnel the water away from the foundation.

I have it up now since it's winter with no snow on the roof, and also the house next door is under construction so leaving it down is a sure-fire way to get it destroyed.

                              • It looks like when it's down it will funnel water to the neighbors foundation.
