  • Maternity tourism?

Now the wing nuts love to talk about "anchor babies" (supposed cases where pregnant Mexican women sneak into the US so the baby becomes a US citizen so they can sign up for welfare) but CNN has a totally different take.

They're saying maternity tourism is common and growing but it is mostly very wealthy foreign women who do it. They're saying some foreign women spend up to $50,000 for the whole thing just so they can make sure their child has US citizenship as a kind of insurance policy if things go to hell in their home country. Interesting stuff.

I don't believe the 50k price for a second, but let's say it is 50k. They still make out like the bandits that they are.

50k? That's either an overstatement, or your embassy officials demand really large bribes.

Assuming they are paying the hospital bills out of pocket, $50k sounds just about right.

Okay, let's say it's 5K for the tickets and 10K for the accommodation and food. Are you telling me American hospitals charge 35K for a single birth?

Try getting a visa and writing in the purpose for visit section, "To have a baby."

That's probably on the low end, if I had to guess.

Do people from the projects give birth in the gutter then?

                        No, they rely on Medicaid.

I'm seeing numbers between 8k amd 10k for average cost of a birth in the US.

What if a tourist goes into labour on Times Square? Will they doctors hold her hostage until she pays the bill?
