For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Of course. Everyone has their preferences in regards to when and where government steps in and runs portions of people's lives. It's not as simple as "people make the best choices for themselves".Originally posted by Kuciwalker View PostYes. So? Obviously, in certain areas we expect one problem to be larger than the other.

No, that does not follow. The agency problem of an individual wrt himself is 0. The agency problem of the gov't wrt the same individual > 0. So we let the individual choose.
(Alternately, you can concede that some individuals do have an agency problem wrt themselves, but it is still almost universally less than the gov't's).
The agency problem of a parent wrt his child is > 0, and most importantly is (for some people) very large. The agency problem of the gov't wrt the same child > 0, but most importantly (for some people) it is much smaller than the other problem. So, we let the gov't choose.

You're just scared of having the failings of your "throw cash at everything" approach to fixing problems discussed.Originally posted by KrazyHorse View PostWhy are you bothering to discuss this seriously with aeson? He's disingenuous to the extreme.
Disingenuous is hiding behind "disingenuous" when it's clear by your other postings that you'll go on for pages, or even several threads, with those who you call disingenuous about what you are discussing. Nope... you're just scared. Now go cower in your corner. We can throw cash at you to make you brave maybe?

I was not addressing an agency problem with self. Though you are quite right that there are cases wher ethere is an agency problem with regard to self.Originally posted by Kuciwalker View PostNo, that does not follow. That is your preference, as is how/when to judge the inequality. So we let the individual choose.
Children are not included in your universe. Check.(Alternately, you can concede that some individuals do have an agency problem wrt themselves, but it is still almost universally less than the gov't's).
You're drawing an arbitrary line at 18 and pretending it's ok to run people's lives before that line, but not later. (Except for "some people" in some cases.)
You're just picking and choosing who is responsible with money and who is not. Much the same as Jon is doing. To you it's important to do in regards to parents. For Jon it's important to do in regards for health insurance. That's fine of course. Everyone has their preference as to where to draw the line. The agency problem of a parent wrt his child is > 0, and most importantly is (for some people) very large. The agency problem of the gov't wrt the same child > 0, but most importantly (for some people) it is much smaller than the other problem. So, we let the gov't choose.
In regards to helping people out, why should we not make these determinations? If they were capable on their own, they wouldn't need the help. (In the US)
