Maybe. But the actor annoys the hell out of me, one of my least favorite castings up there with Mance and Illyrio from Season 1. His accent changes more often than his demeanor. Like I said, one note. Any good rat****er should be masks behind masks behind masks.

Luckily so many really excellent actors to balance them out.

Indeed. In the books everyone knows Littlefinger is a conniving rat****er, but everyone tends to be scared of him, because he connives so well.

TBH, I always pictured Mance as being a bit younger, but Ciaran Hinds plays the role very well.

Hell no. Great actor and perfect as Ceasar but horrifically miscast for Mance (as a last minute casting change and it shows). We've already got a hundred other dour middle-aged men stomping about in dark colors. Why we needed another one instead of book-Mance is beyond me. I'm not a purist but I don't get what they were thinking with show-Mance.

Ygritte on the other hand, how the **** did Rose Leslie make the most annoying character in the books likable?

Gravitas. He's believable as a guy who could get the wildlings to unite. While I love the Mance of the books, he is rather lacking in that respect.

Ya, good point show-Mance can bring the gravitas more than book-Mance. It's just that we've already got a slew of other greying gravitas-dripping grumpy dudes (from Tywin to Stannis to Ned to Jeor Mormont to...), would be good to mix it up a bit and show-Mance just doesn't at all.

GRRM wastes my time with boring nobodies who show up once, maybe twice, and then are completely irrelevant thereafter. It should be noted that even in the show there's too many ****ing characters. It's impossible to keep track of them all unless you start trolling wikis or memorizing it because you're somebody with way too much free time.
The more detailed a story is written, with characters and food descriptions, the more real it feels.
The more background and history you can refer to, the more real it feels. It adds to the atmosphere of the book, eventhough it doesn't truly help the story move forward.
