- He fell in love remotely with some woman from Texas, which is why he first made his trips down to Texas. It somehow didn't work out, she's now married with kids but that hasn't stopped Ben from moving to Texas to try again (or something)
- His dad died (which we knew)
- Lots of other stuff I don't recall. I read it quite quickly at work.

So he must be here illegally if he actually hasn't married a U.S. citizen. I can't imagine an employer sponsoring a visa for someone with a degree in history.

I still don't understand why he would even want to move here for a private school job. In my experience, Texas private schools usually pay $10K below public school base salaries. You could make more working as a manager at McDonalds. It seems like he could earn more money working in Canada.
