  • Granted, many of the units in the West and the Balkans were broken down husks recuperating from the East. But then again, even those husks had remarkably powers of resistance. More importantly, as 1944 dragged on, much more of Germany's production went to reinforcing the West rather than the East. Transferring the formations and the productions would have made a significant difference in the East.

      From Hitler's POV the US and Germany were at war anyway(or at least in a shooting one), and the shock of the early Japanese attacks probably sent a message that the US was going to be easy to beat. Might as well make it official.
      Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

      • And let's not discount the fact that the Germans saw the convoy-less Atlantic Coast as easy pickings for the U-boats. Hence Unternehmen Paukenschlag.
