  • I have survived my second annual thinning of the herd

Though I suppose I wasn't really a candidate last time after only having worked for two months.

Amazing. I also survived the thinning of the herd today.

Though they mostly got rid of a lot of useless hardware people. Software is too important.

My group didn't lose anybody. The group next to us lost 4/14. Then again, they are useless.

I knew immediately because one of my processes started throwing an error.

A couple of the useless project managers found out when they weren't invited to the weekly meeting at 2pm like all of their colleagues were. Bam!

Do they let them clean out their desks? Our guys were escorted out so smoothly nobody saw them go.

EDIT: perhaps they were simply killed

At Yellow Pages, people usually found out they were being laid off when their user accounts didn't work in the morning when logging in. #classy

Not sure. No one in our area got laid off at all. We found out after lunch with the 2pm meeting they weren't invited to.

I swear to god, they have a button that managers hit to delete your username. People disappear instantly.

It's just a simple click to delete someone from Active Directory. Which also deletes their email, IM, login, etc. and removes them from the directory.

I believe our directory is stored on our proprietary db system, and from there propagates to windows stuff.

They also announced to the rest of us, via email, that "if the person next to you is not in today, they are likely not with the company anymore"

My old manager nearly got fired for getting one of his friend's iPods from his desk, since he was not allowed to clear his desk. The company asserted he was trying to steal company information to give to his now-unemployed-friend. My manager responded by quitting on the spot, sending them scrambling to try to replace him. It was glorious. They resorted to getting me to replace him. Two weeks later I gave my notice to move back home. Glorious again.

They've still not recovered. Constant cluster****s. They "updated" the Android app with one that was not correctly signed, causing it to be deleted from hundreds of thousands of phones. Glorious.

They had to email me to beg me for the encryption key. Marketing people thought they could handle tech stuff with only outsourced techies. Hah.

I was under the impression that at most companies, firing people is very difficult. This makes it sound routine and rather...unfriendly. My dad has told me that where he works, when they fire people they are very gracious about it (or as gracious as they can be).
