I'm sure it's very difficult for the person making the decision. Unless either the guy firing or the guy being fired is a douche.

I've been laid off before, I didn't find it all that unpleasant. They stick a contract infront of you with a lot of zeros, you get to go home early and get paid for months while not working. Or in my case, I got a different job the next week and cashed two paycheques for months.

I'm sure the experience is quite different for me than it would be for a 30-year veteran assembly line worker at a Ford plant or whatever, though.

Getting laid off is kind of like failing OCS, except you get a lot of money for it.

Is the bottom bucket 20%? 10%?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Is it rare to get fired without severance?

KH didn't say anything about being fired without severance...

You can only get fired without severance for cause. Or if you have something in your employment contract about that, IIRC.

I know, it's an unrelated question. Just a kid curious about jobs in real life, sorry

They canned 5% of their traders.

                        5% is relatively gentle.

In Canada (and I'm not sure about the US), the amount of money owed to you is AT LEAST two weeks. Depending how long you worked there, it's more. I'd worked for the company 2 years, so they had to give me at least three weeks notice. But because I got none, and because they knew they were breaking the employment contract, they basically give you a large sum of money and extended periods of benefits for hush money when you sign a contract promising not to sue them.

Or you can not sign the contract and get lots of money by taking them to court (or a tribunal in Canuckistan).

HC, it is nonexistent in the vast majority of American jobs. It's only professional white collar jobs and high level blue collar jobs that have severance pay. You'll never see a cashier, teller, nurse, manufacturing worker, deliveryman, etc. etc. get severance pay.

I also doubt that the entry-level analysts at Goldman Sachs or anything get severance pay when they get culled, either. They might though.

That's not legal here. It's probably not legal there either, unless you're in an at-will state?

                                Huh?

Unemployment compensation is your severance pay for most jobs.
