    I'm talking about the subject matter, not the school. You could get a PhD in the history of aboriginal Canada and it's still not very difficult.

    He's studied easy fields to an extreme degree. That doesn't make you an intellect or even intelligent. It means you are driven enough to waste your time, but not smart enough to recognize it is a waste of time.

    Ignatieff is a man who wants to be seen as an intellect. He's got an ego about it and it shows. I've not seen anything from him that really demonstrates he's very intelligent. A PhD from Harvard in History does not impress me at all. I've more respect for your average mathematics graduate from a state university.

      Ignatieff has a PhD in History, Harper has a Masters in Economics.

      Which one do you respect more in a national leader?

      FWIW, I don't think PhDs are as hard as you think to get. Even from Harvard. The vast majority of people choose not to pursue it, it's not that they can't. I work with many PhDs from much more difficult fields (math, computer science) and while some are obviously very intelligent, others just seem like they have good work ethic.

        Right. Put 50 historians in a room and you're likely to get a fair amout of detailed agreement. You talk to one economist and he/she will probably disagree with him/herself after a few minutes.

        Economics is almost as effective as reading entrails.
        Unsure of what I'm talking about, ask a historian.

          It's hard to disagree when all you do is read what other people write and reframe it. The only disagreement is when the historians branch out and start giving their opinions on the facts ("The reason Hitler did this is ..."). It's a joke.

          For all of your qualms, Canada has come out of the recession very strongly. And a lot of that has to do with how Harper handled the economy. It's not as wishy-washy as you think. There are some fringe economists, but the basics are pretty well defined and observable in the real world.

                  History is a broad subject, usefulness depends on what aspect was studied. Both subjects can be moulded to suit whatever idealogy is desired to the point of uselessness.
                  Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi Wan's apprentice.

                      As in, not given to the banks?

                      There are other factors at play as well. The US' markets are vastly more deregulated, which is why your hole was much deeper to begin with.

                              this is the spin that the banks and their apologists have been putting out. the reality is rather more complex.

                                Thanks to the central Canadian punditocracy, I now know why the Conservatives won an overwhelming election victory, and why the Liberals were pulverized. It was those nasty attack ads on TV.

                                ...So basically, the public agreed with their campaign message? I don't get it--is that supposed to be a problem? It seems like democracy in action.
