    • It's looking like a landslide. The Conservatives are taking 60% of the seats.

      • Hmmmm, looks like a majority for the Cons then, but on the other hand the BQ looks like it's getting annihilated, which is pretty unalloyed good...

        • Indeed. The Bloc is leading in only 3 ridings.

          • NDP seems to be surprising a lot of people
Even a fool is thought wise if he remains silent.

              • Well, I'm relieved the Alberta economy won't crash now.

But I'm worried what Harper will do with a majority.

I see a lot in Harper I don't like . .. . but I don't think anything worrisome will happen-- I expect he will just go out and execute his platform-- but like you I will be interested

                  • How much of the popular vote did the conservatives get? ~40%? And they have total control of Canada now? That's pretty ****ed up.

                    • Yup, but they've got a majority that's built on sweeping most of Ontario electorally. I just don't see Ontario holding up in the long term as a Conservative stronghold electorally, so it seems like a pretty damn shaky majority unless something changes...

Pretty typical for a parliamentary system with first past the post voting. With 4 parties usually having significant seats, I don't recall anyone getting a majority of the vote recently

No, it's multipaty democracy in a FPTP system. You simply don't have the intellectual firepower to understand that there can be more than two credible parties.

                            Depends-- If either

                            1. The NDP is perceived as strong and the Liberals come back a bit, there could be continuing vote splits
                            2. Harper does ok in majority and is not "scary" and the economy does well,

In either case he could win again-- BUT thats a long way off---

I actually think the NDP strength in Quebec is more questionable in the long term-- You have to think some version of the sovereigntists comes back and the Liberals will come back a bit in Quebec

Yeah, if I think someone else's political system sounds crazy I must be too stupid to understand it. It's not the number of parties that I find baffling but the mix of FPTP with more than two national parties.
