indeed. we should allow the military to tell us how much money they need and give it to them no questions asked. those damn civilians don't know ****!"The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

I know more about the real world than both of you, evidently. What's true in the military is true in business -- if you have someone looking at how much money THEY need, they'll ALWAYS ask for more. Who says "I have too much money, TAKE IT AWAY!"?"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The amount of **** shipped to San Diego (going through American customs) and then hauled up to Canada on the highways (going through Canadian customs) is pretty much nil. It makes no sense to ever do so.
Vancouver is one of the busiest ports in North America for a reason, and it's not cause we get our **** through San Diego.
Do you have any idea how much of a hassle it is going through customs? Do you know it's not free? Why the **** would they go through it TWICE? So if one were to draw up the National Security(as opposed to National Interests) requirements for the US, what would you get?
(1)Defense of US Territories
(2)Energy security
(3)free flow of commerce.
(4)secure nuclear deterrent
So of those you would need about the same (maybe with more hulls, but not necessarily with $1.5bil DDGs) size of the navy to make sure no one tries to close off choke points. The Spice...errr...oil, must flow!
You DO NOT need as big an air force. If we're only doing Continental defense(in other words, we aren't dicking around with forward deployed tripwires that are intended to guarentee we get involved with foreign adventures that means tactical air and longrange bombers. You do not need the amount of heavy airlifters we currently have. You probably do not need as many tactical aircraft.
And of course you do not need an army or Marines anywhere close to their current sizes. If I had my druthers I would turn the Army into a glorified air defense artillery corps. Marines would be, like, the size they were in the 20s. Personnel costs are by far the biggest expenditure for the US military, and that carries over to "non DoD expense" through the VA and medicare.
So your case is: without the US, we could not use the shipping lanes in the Red Sea. Because no other nation on this planet has a Navy that could take on scattered piratesToday, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

Lonestar, given that personnel costs are such an overwhelmingly large part of the cost of the military, don't you think that cutting the air force isn't nearly as productive as simply firing half the army?
Personally, I agree with cutting the army. I would then expand the national guard a bit. In the event we need to suddenly mobilize for war we can do what we historically have done and federalize the guard. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?
