What? Companies are not gangs. They are not fighting other companies that disrespect their sets or their 'brand', I guess. That's not how companies work or the type of people that sit on board of directors.Originally posted by gribbler View PostIf gangs fight over turf, what is so absurd about companies fighting each other?
A company would only want to get boots on the ground if it benefits them financially... and they obviously wouldn't field a military (that wouldn't be their core competency!); they would outsource that to the government."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Well I wasn't really that aware of it, especially not to the extent of Chiang Kai-shek's son being a Wehrmacht officer! Sorry, I haven't read about World War II since I was a kid so I didn't know this.Originally posted by gribbler View PostIt's also well known. If you're going to act like a know-it-all you could at least take the effort to know something.
I'm sure someone else here didn't know either and would appreciate being enlightened."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

You're being too literal, Al B. Sure!. That may be how corporations work now but not necessarily in the future. You know like how kings and queens used to be dominant but are ceremonial nowadays. So instead now legislatures that "represent" the people are in control.

You're assuming the government is relatively strong, in which case companies can't use force to engage in rent seeking behavior anyway. And if two companies are in conflict are they going to both use the government to fight the other one?Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostWhat? Companies are not gangs. Look anything is possible but if you were to run the gamut of possible war scenarios or even possible war scenarios in which the war was influenced by a company to better a company's bottom line, there would be far more scenarios that would be anything else than what you describe of companies actively fielding armies and waging war with other companies."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Bingo. You also have companies that start to downtick annual evals so they can justify firings of reservists who get called up.Originally posted by Oerdin View PostA lot of the reservists I know ended up unemployed when they came back. Employers aren't supposed to fire reservists but there are tons of loopholes with the main one being if there is a general layoff at a company then the employer can include the reservists in the general layoff. Guess who ends up first on the list to get chopped? Also even if they have their job still when they come back there is the problem of a big one year hole in their career experience so they still end up getting knocked off promotion ladders in their real career when they get back.
Also, I always did like "small government/libertarians" who joined the military and/or went to a Public University. Obviously Santa Claus was signing their checks/subsidizing their tuition.Today, you are the waves of the Pacific, pushing ever eastward. You are the sequoias rising from the Sierra Nevada, defiant and enduring.

World War III will be fought between runaway artificial intelligences. Duh. Don't you know anything?Originally posted by gribbler View PostWhy would there be another world war? Seriously? This is the best you can do?Originally posted by Al B. Sure! View PostWhat?
You honestly think companies would fight an actual blood war with each other? Are you high? They would get their governments to serve their business interests in the name of national security. The governments would wage war, not the companies themselves.
Conterpoint: Two companies of the same nation.Indifference is Bliss

Where is the police in all this? The military? The media? It would have to be two companies from the same nation in some third-world craphole without the infrastructure to prevent this. That could happen but it wouldn't be some widespread thing that we need to be worried about which was the idea that brought this all up (ie- military not smart career choice for what the world is gearing up for)Originally posted by N35t0r View PostSeriously?
