Solaris servers were designed for idiot sysadmins with Sun certifications.

Nobody at TJ has sun certification. But they did give us $350,000 of free servers
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Have you even used any of the competitors to these things?

That's the only reason people use Sun servers. They donate them to schools in hopes people learn them and become familiar with them and think they're hot **** so they can convince businesses to spend 3x market value on rebranded Intel motherboards with a slow operating system on it, just so they can use their certifications in the real world.

Sun Cluster is the best we've been able to use. We don't have the money for things like vmWare and when we tried to do failover with Xen it was a catastrophe. **** heartbeat.

We've had significantly better reliability with Solaris than with Linux, Asher. And their hardware is quality stuff. Also, I'll say it again: ZFS

Solaris running AFS is awesome. ZFS means we don't have to salvage nearly as frequently and we can use snapshots to back it up really easily.

There's a reason Sun is dead. I'll leave it at that.

Even worse, at one point I had a MCSE as well. Truly, the certification for idiots.

(well, that and anything with the "+" suffix)

I don't believe Linux is a good server OS. It's just cheap and easy to find people who know it now.

BSD is a better server, if you can't afford a real OS like AIX.

Out of curiosity, have you guys benchmarked Solaris/OpenSolaris vs Linux on the same HW?

If Linux is faster than you, you're doing something horribly wrong.

We've found that Sun Ray terminals are absolutely perfect for a number of things around the school. The Windows machines take ages for kids to logon and our UNIX setup is much faster. We can easily deploy a bunch of Sun Rays anywhere in the school, they take up very little bandwidth, and they are reliable as hell because several servers can die before anything bad happens what with failover. And kids with smartcards can hotdesk, which is a really neat feature. Only problem is when the kerberos tickets time out and you have to get an admin to kill your session, we haven't bothered to address that yet.

Sun Rays were epic failures in the real world. If Oracle hasn't discontinued them yet, they will shortly.

Man, we're not even suppose to use scripts at my place of work. You think we do any actualy benchmarking?

Not sure what you mean by "if linux is faster than you" but the only OS benchmarks we've run recently were when we were testing various backend storage setups and our Solaris systems beat the crap out of Linux.

Go into any US Government agency in the IC, and you'll find them all over the place.
