Yep. Most of the commission are former life-long telecom employees/executives. They only cause problems for us. Canadian Content regulations, retarded channel carriage rules for cable/satellite companies, and **** like this...

        The "review" is over.

The Harper government will overturn the CRTC’s decision that effectively ends “unlimited use” Internet plans if the regulator doesn’t rescind the decision itself.

Industry Minister Tony Clement made the surprise announcement late Wednesday night via his closely followed Twitter account.

The Tories have said unless the CRTC rescinds this ruling, they're going to overturn it.

They're also hauling the chairman of the CRTC infront of a committee to explain himself tomorrow.

It figures...because I cannot see how such a ruling could possibly be in the interests of the Canadian economy as a whole, and would probably be a significant barrier to economic growth.

But it is nice to see this has been overruled. Let's hope some heads roll for this one too

Holy **** is this guy stupid.

Even if it changes the billing requirements, CRTC still wants to "find economic ways to discipline the use of the Internet," von Finckenstein said in response to a question. Companies like Netflix are "putting a great stress on the Internet and there's no incentive for companies to invest in maintaining the Internet." Usage-based billing would encourage people to adopt more bandwidth-efficient technologies (or to forgo things like Internet video altogether, which would be terrific for cable operators).
                      ****.

It gets CHEAPER EVERY YEAR to expand capacity. Instead of crippling innovation and gouging Canadians, perhaps the solution to the expanding "problem" of people USING THE BANDWIDTH THEY ARE BEING SOLD is to in fact STOP OVERSELLING YOUR NETWORKS and INCREASE CAPACITY TO MEET DEMAND. The ISPs are incredibly profitable, they can CLEARLY afford to do this.

von ****enstein needs to be fired.

Well it is good that the government is strongarming them into doing what they should be doing - progressing forward. It just sounds like a glorified cartel by another name from my perspective. The free, cheap movement of data is critical to a modern economy and modern society

They aren't exactly strongarming this; they merely asked the CRTC to come up with another ruling. Somehow I doubt that we'll get much out of this. They'll probably tone down the harshness of the previous decision, but in the end they're still committed to penalizing heavy usage instead of lackluster investment.

And we're at the brink of a federal election... As stated already, the major ISPs also happen to be the media.

Boris, the government said they'll throw out their ruling or the government will do it for them. It's strongarming.
