In I'll be sure's defence: there's some good hip-hop of course. Sadly, most bestselling rappers are blinghobadassrappers :/

Intellectually curious people tend to be smart enough to pick how they spend their time and what they learn about carefully.
I've heard a lot of rap, I've not liked any of it. It's not that I'm not open minded, it's that I just don't like it. It's grating. It's about image. It's melody-challenged. The rhythm in every rap song is virtually identical. The beats are predictable. The sampling is heavy. The rappers are douchebags.
It's a shame you've not been exposed to good music.

I like music that is complex with many layers to it and meaningful & genuine. The vast, vast, vast majority of rap is none of the that.

I appreciate the support, Traianvs but I'm trying to point out that a lot of mainstream popular rap has value and is being wrongly mischaracterized as bling bling rap by posters here who are explicitly unfamiliar with rap music.
I once again extend my offer to supply anyone with even a modicum of intellectual curiosity with the names of songs/albums/artists which have had mainstream success that I feel will be received with some appreciation to at least the artistic or social merits of the genre. The length of my list may be as long as you request or have time to listen to. Considering that the average song is around 4 minutes, I strongly encourage anyone with 20 minutes of time to take me up on this offer and take a serious, open-minded listen. Don't be scared to learn something.
Years ago, I introduced the poster JohnT (I think his name was JohnT) to modern neo-soul R&B and he became a big fan of that music.

I'm confused why anyone would take you up on that offer. It's not that mainstream rap is hard to find. I hear it all the time, usually through the 100kW car stereos of the intellectually curious thug in the 1980s Dodge next to me at a red light.
Why don't you look into real music?
Look for songs with complexity in it, not childish rhymes over a simplistic, repetitive beat.

In my view, Post-Rock has been one of the best Rock subgenres over the past decade.
They're epic, breaching the repeated verse-chorus-verse concept. Great for late night sessions

I wonder what Asher would have said about rock and roll in the 1950's... what he would have said about jazz and blues in the 1930's...
But you're a straight hater, Asher. You talked so much **** and put me down when I posted my spoken word. **** you.

Probably would've liked them.
If your idea is that I don't like "new genres" or "different genres", you're way off. I like genres of music way newer than rap is.
I don't like rap because it lacks what I consider to be core to what music should be about: melody and rhythm and soulful expression. Yes, there's the odd rapper with meaningful lyrics but it still misses out on the key components of what makes good music.
Similarly, with dance music -- beats serve to keep time, not to be the focal point of the song. The lyrics to dance songs are almost always completely airheaded and repetitive as well. Insufferable.
I'm blue, ba-da-be-ba-da-ba.

If none of you have ever asked an adult well-versed in rap with at least half a brain about introducing you to some rap and honestly listened to it, you have no reason or basis for categorically denigrating the entire genre of music.
It's as simple as that. You can not hate what you have never tasted. Anything else is inherently prejudicial.
I've never tasted poo. Am I not permitted to say it isn't food?
Another problem is I've heard rap...he acts like people who don't like rap just never heard it before.
You can most certainly hate what you've heard many times. It's not prejudice, it's taste.

I know this isn't helping my case but I can't resist posting this which is the synthesis of dance, r&b, and rap that must be the devil to Asher! A rap/r&b song that samples I'm Blue:
Asher's ears revolt.

Another problem with rappers: They can't seem to spell. Either that or they think they're clever with names like "Flo Rida".
Either way...douches.
Or should I say douchezz?
