And I don't see why the Cuban Revolution can't be considered a successful revolution by people with limited weapons against a nation's military.
I don't know a lot about it. It certainly looks like they did a pretty good job. However, that link TMM provided says Batista was provided with all of seven (7) American Sherman tanks, which isn't exactly overwhelming firepower.

Why. The. Hell. Would you start by mounting an armed raid on a hardware store? Give the teenager at the back door a dime bag of marijuana, he'll look the other way while you loot the whole supply room. Again, this revolution sucks.

And I'm sure it's accomplished by guys with handguns raiding the base and taking the commander hostage.

I assumed that when you said "explosives and other materiel" you meant stuff that required actual armed force to steal. I'm not actually getting hot, I judged the profanity a measured response to "you're just grasping."

Oh of course not. You want it to be done as quietly and under the radar as possible.

For example, in 2008 when a case of M-16's was stolen from an AFB, it supposedly went down like this:

The man was 40 to 50 years old, medium height, heavy set, with gray hair, balding on top. Witnesses said he put the container in his vehicle, a light-in-color or green-in-color four-door, and left the area.

So there's only unarmed bribery and full scale armed assault? That's a very black and white view.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Exactly. Which is why weapons are thoroughly unnecessary to get more weapons, at least (and maybe even especially) at the small scale.

Well, no, there's also plain theft, talking over the store owner, or even buying the stuff at a bulk discount if you like. But what do you suggest in between? "Hey, I need a lot of your supplies, and I'm not interested in paying for them or explaining what I'm doing, so could you just be a dear and fork them over? If not, hey, that's fine, I'll come back with a gun and see if you like it better." I'm just not seeing how guns can be involved and have it not be armed robbery. By definition.

                    There's also truck hijackings.

                    • Or you could go after the PD's.

This happened 2 months ago in Corpus Christi

About 12 pounds of explosives were stolen Wednesday from two Corpus Christi Police Department storage units in a remote area of Annaville.

Stolen items include 3 pounds of TNT and 5 pounds of C4, Police Chief Troy Riggs said.

Several more destructive items, including commercial-grade ammonia nitrate, were not stolen, leaving investigators hopeful the thieves are not proficient with explosives.

It's clearly not hard to get weapons/explosives if you really want them and don't care about getting caught and the obviously stiff penalties.

                      • No, that's not surprising. I always figured drug cartels favored the submachine gun angle, though, and that they had expensive tastes in brands. And military-grade hardware guarding the estate.

                        • I go to the Cabela's in Kansas City, Kansas, by the way. It's less than fifteen minutes from my house. Amazing selection.

Wow, you sure do like to do things the needlessly complicated way. Why bother, say, paying off an immigrant warehouse worker? You could just get a hold of the shipping schedule for a hardware store, arrange to intercept the truck at a given point, drag him out of the truck, drive it to a secluded place without people noticing, and leave everybody wondering who the hell hijacks a truck full of stuff. Or you could simply hijack the first Lowe's truck you see, maybe get yourself a grab bag of tiles, lumber and toilet seats!

EDIT: Wait a minute, even if you do want to hijack the thing, you don't really need a gun for that! If you're going to magically pick a point he'll stop at, just hotwire the damned thing while he's getting dinner or on the john! That way he won't even be able to tell his bosses what you look like. I'm beginning to suspect that maybe you've got yourself a hammer and now every problem looks like a nail.
