A terrible side effect of this whole event may be less time spent with representatives. Security will obviously be beefed up at these events and the upcoming election may become a nightmare for security minded folks to plan.

I'm sure this "crisis" won't be wasted and reforms will be called for but there should be a pause and consideration before "action" is taken. The facts should be gathered and an attempt to understand why this particular person did what he did, If that is even possible. Not so long ago there were a lot of protesters carring signs calling for Bush to be killed and comparing him to Hitler. This past year, liberal groups spent a lot of money "targeting" those democrats who they felt let the cause down and I don't remember hysterical rants about that. What happened was wrong and maybe politicians on BOTH sides need to realize that their words carry some weight to people who aren't exactly seeing the world in a rational light but in the end the right to speak ones mind should be protected unless they specifically call for violence. That means the Beck's and the Oberman's of the world to."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

The good thing about this is, the fellow is a blank slate. His loyalties, AFAICT, were to voices in his head, or perhaps to the sensible advice of his neighbor's dog. His long-term effect on American politics should therefore be minimal, and what effects he will have will cancel each other out as the left and right hasten to convert his crazy Mein Kampf bull**** into a clear defense of their opponents' POV. The only position that might be genuinely affected by this crackhead is gun ownership, which A. I don't view as terribly important and B. has so many well-funded advocates that his rampage won't accomplish anything regardless.
If we, as a nation, took the pointless shooting spree of one crazed jackass as somehow indicative of our political situation--now, that would be a second tragedy.

Have you ever read the graphic novel "Preacher"? There's a character who, literally, blows his face off with a shotgun. Back when I lived in Ann Arbor, there was a guy in town just like that.

Have we confirmed that he is a right-wing nutjob yet? It is the only possible outcome, after all.
