I'm waiting for bc1871 to show up and tell us how Gifford deserved what she got.

“We are extremely concerned by the raids, man,” said Paul Stewart, executive director of the Medicinal Cannabis Collective Coalition, which represents several San Jose dispensaries. “They are acting on what could be considered a specious legal finding by the D.A., man; their finding is that all collectives are operating illegally because they are making a profit, man.”

        For any who follow baseball:

Ex-manager Green's granddaughter killed in Arizona shooting
        CBSSports.com wire reports
        Jan. 9, 2011

PHILADELPHIA -- The 9-year-old girl killed by a gunman who opened fire at an Arizona congresswoman's event is the granddaughter of former major league baseball manager Dallas Green, the Philadelphia Phillies said Sunday.

Christina-Taylor Green was shot outside a Tucson grocery story when she went to see Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was meeting with constituents there. Giffords was among 13 people wounded in the melee that killed six people, including Arizona's chief federal judge and an aide for the Democratic lawmaker. Related links

"The Phillies organization expresses our heartfelt condolences to Dallas and Sylvia and the entire Green family on the senseless, tragic loss of Christina's life," team president David Montgomery said. "She was a talented young girl with a bright promising future. Her untimely death weighs heavily on our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected by yesterday's horrific shooting."

An uncle of the 9-year-old girl told the Arizona Republic that a neighbor was going to the event and invited her along because she had just been elected to the student council and was interested in government.

Dallas Green is a former pitcher and manager in the major leagues. He's an executive advisor for the Phillies, the team he managed to the World Series championship in 1980.

I'm surprised how little coverage there is of the fact a judge was killed. Are judge killings that common?

            Also,

to the thread title. Isn't Gatekeeper a part of the media? Shouldn't he strive to be just a little more accurate?

No, they are not. The last one was in the early 80s I think.

Yeah, I found out about the shooting, then read about it in my morning newspaper.

Someone took Sarah Palin's rhetoric to "take out" political office holders literally.

Um, no. I don't think this guy was motivated by Palin.

Worse. Mortal Kombat has at least some intellectual value in teaching children the anatomy of the spinal column.

Initial reports were that she was dead at the scene.

I read that the guy who did this had writings of Marx, Engels as well as Hitler's as favourites. Typical Nazicommie if you ask me.

(Serious) questions for the medical experts: They also report the bullet has gone through her (Gifford's) brain, but the docs said they're optimistic about her recovery, is that true? How common is it to recover from something like this? Is it even possible to recover fully? I thought 'shot in the head' means pretty much you're dead most of the time....

                          Here's a good article on that: http://www.slate.com/id/2175739/

Have you ever read the graphic novel "Preacher"? There's a character who, literally, blows his face off with a shotgun. Back when I lived in Ann Arbor, there was a guy in town just like that.

So the rest of the media is just as bad at their job as Gatekeeper?

The doctor described the gunman as a white male in his mid-20s with short hair and “dressed in a shabby manner.”

Very tragic especially about the little girl. What I find interesting is that people believe this is a new phenomenon in American history. For the most part America has been spared the worst of things like this but it does happen and sometimes it ends up like this. I'm sure this "crisis" won't be wasted and reforms will be called for but there should be a pause and consideration before "action" is taken. The facts should be gathered and an attempt to understand why this particular person did what he did, If that is even possible. Not so long ago there were a lot of protesters carring signs calling for Bush to be killed and comparing him to Hitler. This past year, liberal groups spent a lot of money "targeting" those democrats who they felt let the cause down and I don't remember hysterical rants about that. What happened was wrong and maybe politicians on BOTH sides need to realize that their words carry some weight to people who aren't exactly seeing the world in a rational light but in the end the right to speak ones mind should be protected unless they specifically call for violence. That means the Beck's and the Oberman's of the world to.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh
