I was thinking in terms of submitting a low bid, because you'd be blinding bidding against other people. Therefore I'd walk away with 5k, while anybody bidding above that would walk away empty handed. But if somebody came in with a bid for 4999, I'd be poached like an egg.

Even in that case, I realize that my answer probably isn't ideal. I should be bidding at 4998, anticipating that the other people would anticipate a 5k bid, and go 1 below that.

But that's a completely different problem isn't it? This **** is hard.

Here's another question: how many of you are hedging the bigger risks in your lives? The risk aversion that most of you display means that you should be strongly motivated to do so. I, for one, am planning to buy long-dated puts on a number of different bank stocks (not my employer's, as that would contravene several compliance guidelines).
