        Well it's kind of like anarcho-socialism...but I guess if you're deluded enough to be a communist, any sort of intellectual gymnastics is possible.

          The point is that his actual views on social freedoms were libertarian not authoritarian. This is separate to economic freedoms where he was indeed a communist.

                    I still maintain that, as a whole, Cuba was better after the revolution than before it. The blockade was a shame though. It meant they didn't move forward but a tiny bit since then.

                      I've often heard stories about the high quality of healthcare and education in Cuba, even if the standard of living in most other respects was poor. It's hard to tell how a country can really develop under socialism when it's subjected to blockades and embargoes.

                      There was also a thing about research into GM crops and Cuba, but I can't remember what it was ... other than Cuba being quite keen on GM technology.
