What do you tell anyone killed or maimed by an inattentive/unskilled driver?

As I've already pointed out, we have laws on the books for that sort of thing. What's your problem?

So we should stop trying to prevent crime and just deal with criminals? Since we can't prevent all crime, it's ridiculous to try and stop some of it?

There are some things that are easier to police than others... Even if unskilled/inattentive drivers are responsible for more accidents than cellphone-using ones, policing cellphone use is easier than policing lack of skill or attention (and even if it wasn't, cellphone use does cause accidents, and it is easy to police, and really not much of a big deal).

You're a little more authoritarian than me. I'd prefer fewer laws not more.

If it's a nuance at worst, and might save me from being run over while crossing the street? I say deal.

[edit:] I mean, I'm in favour of examining everything on a case-by-case basis. I believe that blanket statements like that one are not very helpful.

Ditto. I'd rather the state become less oppressive not more.

A couple years ago Ontario passed a "street racing" law in the aftermath of a particularly horrific high speed crash involving a couple teens. This law created a new offence (out of existing laws mind you) aimed at preventing this scourge. Two years on we have 10's of thousands of Ontario drivers convicted of "street racing" when really all they were doing was speeding.

Pass a new law and I assure you the police will use it. They like new laws.
