Handsfree cellphone usage is just as dangerous as talking to someone in the passenger seat. Let's ban talking to others in cars!

I realise you jest but that is the crux of the issue - We could make a long list of individual items to ban/prohibit or we could rely on the laws already on the books and charge drivers when whatever particular stupid thing they are doing results in careless driving. Don't punish the people perfectly capable of talking and driving just because some people can't manage it.

Nobody thinks they're drunk and all think they can handle other outside influences just fine. It's always the other person.

Drunk isn't something they are doing Sloww. It is a physical condition - not the same.

no it's something they are being. i am drunk, you are on the phone, he is eating a 48" pizza etc.

sloww raises a valid point, as do you in post 19 wezil.

Call it what you want but I can stop talking on the phone/eating pizza, etc. if I see a tricky bit of driving ahead. I can't stop being drunk.

                  Get it yet?

You should consider talking to someone about that. The biggest step is admiting youve got a problem, good luck!

Personally I'm against uniforms for truck drivers and cellphone use on schools.

which is true enough, although i wasn't being serious in that sentence.

the point that was raised by sloww though is that everyone thinks they can do these things safely while driving. that the other people doing them are the problem. there is good evidence that using a cellphone while driving leads to an increased risk of accidents. at the same time people are arrogant about their own abilities.

edit: x-post, was responding to wezil.

Nope. The guy in the passenger seat is aware of the car's surroundings as well, while the guy on the phone isn't. Unless you are talking to the guy in the passenger seat through a cell phone, for whatever reason.

Great. Then let's punish the people too stupid to realise they can't and leave the rest of us alone.

Some people are distracted by the radio while they drive yet I don't hear any calls for a car stereo ban.

And what do you plan to tell the guys who end up killed or maimed by those? "Tough luck"?
