We've already established in this thread that you can't read. No need to drive the point home any further, you ******.

    • To be fair, the default RNG in most programming languages is going to be something like a linear congruential generator, so not exactly as good as the one's you're talking about

      • A number of times in this thread you've quoted my post and then berated it while saying the same thing. Its not me who can't read, and that should be obvious to all...

You also seem to think RNGs on embedded systems compare with the kind you probably use.

This thread ably demonstrates why pure math types fail at software. No concept of the reality of the environments or the practicality of the implementation.

I'm sure you've learned a lot about this in the past 6 months, but you've got a long way to go yet...

This was to KH. on my iPhone. Which, by the way, has a ****ing ****ty RNG.

The period of that generator is still long enough to run through the entire available set of lottery numbers multiple times.

No, you ******, I learned a lot about the usage of RNGs in the 3 years of graduate school I spent doing Monte Carlo simulations. Which is why I know how laughable your posts in this thread are.

By the way, the ****up I found was created by a pure tech guy like you, and was based on reseeding inappropriately.

Any time you find yourself reseeding, step back and punch yourself in the face. Then build it the right way.

            • Poor RNGs can become a security risk long before their period runs out...

Which is why I mentioned specifically (2 pages ago) that this application had no security concerns.

What you are concerned about is getting a large number of identical or nearly identical numbers being sold, and pulling from a single stream with no reseeding guarantees that this will not occur with any higher probability than a truly random distribution would suggest.

                • This has got to be the most boring argument that I've ever read. This is time that I'll never get back. That's just great.

                  • Aren't multiple identical sequences of numbers on tickets for the same draw part of the lottery game?

                    • KH doesn't have any clue what he's talking about is all. He's extrapolating his experience in high-end compute clusters and assuming they hold true for embedded systems.

                      Pro tip: they do not.

His assumptions are wrong, so it follows his conclusions are as well.

No, Asher, I am not "extrapolating" anything here. What I am saying is that reseeding can (and does) create undefined behavior. Drawing from a single stream as long as possible is the best solution here, because it guarantees the independence (measured through a large set of statistical tests) of different lotto tickets put out by these machines.

If you knew how RNGs were built you would know that.
