The other possibility is that I don't, but I have a book about it open right now...
Think opportunity cost.

Look, everyone understand that government spending is funded by taxes. There's nothing insightful about spouting "there's no such thing as a free lunch" when someone wants a government program.
Redistributing money is inefficient and the transaction costs often exceed the redistribution as people adjust their activities to qualify for the handouts.
If people adjusted their activities to qualify for government grants for engineering majors, that would probably be a good thing.
I'm trying to narrow the scope to the level of the person only, not the entire macroeconomic system. I thought I was making that clear.
It just irks me when a well-to-do person who gets everything handed to him derisively mocks others in different circumstances who are just looking for the same.

FWIW my father is also quite wealthy, but he made a point in making me fund my own education. He grew up in a very poor family and had to bust his ass to get everything he wanted, and he wanted to instil the same kind of work ethic and sense of accomplishment and ownership in me and my brother.
At the time I thought he was just an ass, but I appreciate what it did for me now. Then again, I live in a country with reasonable post-secondary education costs and I also had a lot of scholarships and made good money on my own, I never took out a student loan...
Another reason why your "free lunch" comment bothered me, anyway. Somehow I doubt you've even worked a job.

Basically, he decided to give a bunch of free money to the government.

Why? How is that any different from any other government program that claims to know how best to run people's lives?
The benefits of a college education accrue to the student as higher salaries, which provides better input than the government ever could into which majors are valuable.
For someone who makes a big deal about being all about the little picture, you're awfully bad at it.
?
The being cryptic-means-I'm-intelligent game you've been playing lately is getting a little old.

1) Why is redistribution inefficient? Inefficient compared to what? Inefficient towards what end?
2) Please explain what you mean by "transaction costs" in this context. Do you mean "something that sounds bad that I just pulled out of my ass"?

Yeah, and if a government program causes more people to get high value degrees then society will be better off. The market gives some indication of which ones are higher value.
