While in Boston, I got a chance to observe a real, live thirteen-year-old playing Black Ops on XBox Live. I liked the way "camping" was a clever, valid strategy when he did it and a cheap, unfair trick when somebody else did. I pointed this out to him, and he laughed and agreed, without changing. I also noted that he and his friends could easily have slaughtered all comers if they'd used their headsets to coordinate their movements instead of just muttering "Oh my God, that was so unfair" sporadically. I guess it's simply more fun when your character's average life span is nine seconds. But maybe that's because they provided minimal incentives for actually winning the game, so every player was rushing around trying to get kills for himself. Seemed kinda stupid, honestly.

Yeah that's a definite problem. There are objective-based modes but they amount to half the team trying to win the game and rack up the points by taking the objectives (and dying 50 times in the process by just hurling themselves at it human wave-style) and the other half camping and slaughtering anyone on the other team who hurls themselves human wave-style (and getting 50 kills in the process).

Hardcore and Search & Destroy modes place a bit more emphasis on slowing the hell down and thinking before you move though, because in S&D, you don't respawn until the round is over, and in hardcore, a single bullet will kill you and you have to wait to respawn as well, though not the whole round. Hardcore S&D is the ultimate way to play if you want the most tactical experience but even then, things are only vaguely coordinated.

I do got to give credit though it is amazing how there can develop at least some minimal coordination in games even without anyone talking to each other. For example, in capture the flag game modes, there are always people who voluntarily defend the flag, splitting up to cover all approaches, and people who move together to take the flag. It amazes me by how Call of Duty games actually are often not a complete hectic mess and how the individual players doing their own thing can come together into a functional whole.

There's still young gamers who like strategy games no doubt, but this site has no draw in that regard anymore.

I'm among the youngest here, and have been so for 10 years now, and even I fall into the 22+ option. 98% of us do I'd say.

I'm fifteen years old in the morning, then through the afternoon, I go from thirty-three years of age to seventy. Then at night, I'm twenty one years old. Repeat for each day.
