If they would never buy anything, then they're just thieves justifying their theft.
It depends how you define theft.
Theft, to me, is when you steal something from someone.
It is therefore not theft to pirate some IP you definitively could never pay for. They are not losing anything.

I just think someone that creates IP deserves the same protection as someone that creates something more tangible. The investment of their time is the same so I don't think thieves of their output should be treated differently. It's just my opinion. And answers like (They like to have stuff and they don't want others to have it?) is no excuse for stealing.
And granted I'm willing to look the other way when poor people steal food to survive, but you don't need to pirate digital songs to survive. Just being poor is not Carte Blanche

rah, you're still young and still trying to bang that chick who wouldn't have sex with you. This time, you notice that she really likes a painting by some commie French artist, but the painting costs like a million bucks. So instead you find a picture of the painting and paint a nearly identical replica of it and give it to her. She loves the painting, hangs it up on her wall, but still doesn't have sex with you. Is she a thief?
But to your point, NO. If there is a thief in your example, it would be me. But, If I panted a similar painting and didn't represent it as anybody else's but mine, that would be fine.
And no, I'm old, so I would just give her something real expensive and she would have sex with me.

The problem is not being able to pay or not. The problem is charging the correct amount for something that doesn't cost you to make a copy of. If you sell ebooks, there are fixed costs (what you paid the author (for the sake of simplicity let's say she agreed on a lump sum) and what it costs to host your website, maintain your bank account etc.). Variable costs are negligible (unless you sell photographic albums and people buy millions of them using up your traffic quota), and marginal costs therefore are negligible too. How do you determine the price of your ebooks? In real world, you use your marginal price and add a mark-up that will allow you to break even at some point in the future. In our case, your price is 100% mark-up.
Most people understand that and cry bull****. It cost you 0 dollars 0 cents to make my copy of ebook, and you want me to pay an amount similar to what I pay for real books?
Okay, let's say you also understand that and lower your price accordingly, because your variable costs are zero, and your fixed costs are lower, because you don't have to print them. One Russian online bookstore sells ebooks for only 10-20% of the price of the real one, because that's more or less free money for them.
Most people will be fine with that. But what if you can get the same ebook for free? If the author and the digital publisher have met their revenue quota, why not give a copy of your ebook to everyone you know and don't know?
But how can people determine if the creator has earned enough? They can't. How can the creator determine if he has earned enough, especially if he's not a star writer/musician/etc and every sale matters? He can't.

Why do you keep bringing up songs when talking with me?
I'm talking about other things, like learning a craft that requires very expensive IP before you can even start learning it.

Every time you pirate, you've determined that the created has earned enough already. Why are you the judge? In most cases you can be wrong.

Asher, I don't think they should be treated differently. IP is IP. It has a value. You may not agree on the value, but I think it's not your's to set. Only accept.
I can't think of any software that isn't sold to students for a discount. I'm sure there is some but most are.

You represent it as being a copy you've made of the Frenchie. And you're not trying to sell it, just give it away. It's a very close approximation to the real thing, but not perfect. But then again, are copies ever perfect? So are you a thief or not?
If I paid for the original and was making a copy to give to her, NO. If it was no longer protected by copywrite protection, then NO. If it was still protected and I didn't pay for the original or it's rights, then YES.

What if you bought a lock of Miley Cyrus's hair on eBay, then used that hair to clone your own Miley Cyrus to have her star in a show called "Hana Banana." Would that be stealing?
