The massive takeup for Netflix proves this quite wrong.
The massive success of ebooks proves this quite wrong.
Many, many people pirate because it's simply more convenient. Why go to a store and look for books/cds/blurays when you can click a few times and get them online almost instantly?
It takes a long while for companies to figure this out.

when we are at it, imagine a database for film easily accessible on the net, streaming stuff from the 1900 onwards, all films, you can dig by genre, actor, director etc... and it could cost 3-5$per view, as it is only bandwidth which is the real cost, so all the rest goes to the studios, all this available WW, so for Canadians, Europeans etc...
"Imagine" almost like John Lennon... could they have done it? Easily. Would it make them billions? Yes it would. Is it there yet? No, and will not be due to the greedy ****ers thinking in 1960's terms (when most of the current CEO's and directors were teenagers) and instead suing everyone else to "stop piracy". Idiots.
I for sure would not go to any other place as for me 3-5$ are well worth the quality, convenience and speed ie >service< that I could get from a properly managed provider.
Hulu/Netflix is a small step in the right direction in the US only... but the industry needs to take it a lot further than that.

When the DMCA makes it illegal for you to back up YOUR OWN MEDIA that YOU PURCHASED, something is wrong.
Not that I have a dog in this fight one way or the other, but why?
When you buy a house there's a risk it might burn down, when you buy a car there's a risk it might crash, and when you buy a DVD containing a piece of media or software, there's a risk that that one particular tangible manifestation of an idea may be burned, broken, stolen, etc. Isn't this what insurance is for?
(Yeah yeah yeah, obviously the difference is that you can't copy a car or a house, and I'm not saying they're morally equivalent. I'm instead curious why it's such an onerous burden to insure a particular tangible manifestation of an idea the same way.)
I watch TV shows on Project Free TV. I do not feel bad about this at all. I'm not stealing because I already pay for the TV service that runs these shows.
If someone gives me a Galnemer's book to read, isn't that technically theft too, I'm not paying for the book after all.
What about used book stores? Again taking money out of her pocket.
ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

What does the fact you pay for cable have to do with the fact you torrent TV shows?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio
Beyond the semantic correction, you didn't answer the question.

In case of IP of pharmaceutical industry, yes indeed they should. Governments should pay the companies up front and let everyone produce generic versions of their drugs. It's the only decent thing to do. I wouldn't be able to sit on my hands watching people die just because the only cure is too expensive, even though if it's cheap to produce.

You're looking at it from the wrong way.
When you buy a car, you can take it apart and tinker with it. YOU bought it.
When you buy a house, you can renovate it, fix it up, etc. YOU bought it.
When you buy a CD/DVD/Bluray, you can LOOK BUT DON'T TOUCH...even though YOU bought it.
It's inconsistent with the rest of your laws, it's completely nonsensical, and it's an obvious piece of legislation that comes from the US' increased rule by corporate interests, and not private citizens.
People like HC (which are supposed to be right wing) should be incensed by such laws, not supporting them with thumbs ups. It's the government overstepping its bounds to intrude on the private lives of its citizens.
