  • If you were in front of me in line to use an airplane bathroom I would pretend to have to go really badly, cut the line then wait inside until the plane landed.

          • Sorry Asher. I wasn't aiming at you or any other individual. It a general spam comment. I think most of us are sorely tempted. I myself have no claims to being angelic at all times

                • My half-assed idea to solve the issue of IP piracy:

Set up idea markets run either by production companies (record studios, publishers, amazon.com, etc.) or government agencies in which content makers (musicians, authors, inventors, etc.) can submit ideas to be browsed by consumers. Ideas would either be snippets of content (a few songs of an album, a preview of a movie, the first chapter of a novel, etc.) or descriptions of what the idea is. Consumers could then invest money in these ideas. The content maker and the production company would divvy up the investment money, and once the level of investment reached a certain point, the content maker and the producer would actually go ahead and create the content of the idea.

Once the content was created, the producer could sell the physical product of the idea (music CDs, books, film reels) to other companies or to consumers, but the idea itself could be freely distributed, modified, made fun of, or what have you. But in order to make money distributing, modifying, or making fun of an idea, a company or consumer would need to buy rights from the producer.

I'm partial to producers selling their content to ISPs, who would then make the content easy accessible and free of charge to anyone who pays for the ISP.

In the case of an idea market run by a government, the government wouldn't produce the content if the idea reached a certain investment level, it would simply collect a percentage of the investment as a fee for promoting the idea. It would be up to the content maker to spend the money in such a way as to create and distribute the content.

                  • I stopped reading your post at the first line.

IP piracy can never be "solved".

Edit: Actually, I'm wrong. By eliminating the concept of IP, we can solve IP piracy. So there is one way.

                        • If it's ok for musicians to not get properly paid for their work, it's ok for software developers to not get properly paid either. Creating extra instances of both has a marginal cost of practically zero, but if nobody actually pays for it, the content creator is working for nothing, while other people get a free lunch at their expense.

While there are plenty of examples of morally-justified examples of copying, as have been discussed above, including backups, multi-platform copies, and people who buy plenty of stuff but copy other stuff they wouldn't have bought anyway, there are also people who have a policy of not buying anything. Many of these people will happily utilise various arguments in favour of piracy, usually blaming the producer in some way, all to obfuscate the fact that they'd happily steal their food, clothes and car as well if they could get away with it.

I quite like the way that you can listen to songs on Youtube without any legal impediment that I'm aware of, as the streaming content, of limited audio quality and not downloadable for most users is a good way of previewing stuff that you might then go out and buy. Or stay in and buy as is the case these days.

                          • Tax everyone, and then give the money to people as a proportion of most unique downloads. NO WAY that can't work. None!

                            • there's also the case where a particular record is simply not available any more. as someone who has spent more than i care to remember on CDs/vinyls over the years, i used to run into this problem a lot. you want a particular record but can't find it in the shops/on-line, or if you can, it's someone selling it 2nd hand for an inflated price. however, if you know where to look, it's often the case that someone has put it up on the internet for free download. i don't feel bad about downloading stuff like this, since even if i bought it, i wouldn't be benefiting the artist in any way, only someone who's sat on a record for 25 years and now wants to cash in.

of course there's nothing like owning a physical release, but it's not always practical. now i live in brasil and it's even more complicated, because due to my situation i can't purchase physical releases and the country restrictions on certain sites are ridiculous (i'm looking at you, beatport!). so i have to download, often illegally for now. although more often than not i will forgo that and just listen on youtube, grooveshark or similar.
