We went bankrupt because we pegged our currency to the Dollar, when the Dollar was a strong currency (Clinton years). At the end we had to devaluate bbecause all our factories were moving to the much cheaper Brazil, we had high unemployment and deflation.
We went bankrupt because during those years we got indebted in dollars, and that debt became unpayable after the devaluation.

Had we managed to resist 2 years more, the devaluation of the dollar during the years of Bush would have made us competitive again.

Countries like Greece or Portugal may go through something similar soon, they seem to not be able to compete with the Deutsche Mark/euro as their currency.
