If over 65s stop paying property taxes presumably the local schools will suffer. The affluent young people can all move out to an area with a fairer policy. So the schools will suffer further because they aren't getting such high quality kids, which will mean that the area is less desirable, which means property prices will go down, more riff raff will move in, the quality of the area will degrade.

    etc.

So you pay less money, but **** your neighbourhood. Fair deal I guess.

Such little snot-nosed brats. I can never get over it. The audacity is amazing.

      Nice strawman.

No one here has raised the arguement begrudging people the intent to move to good school districts in order to benefit their children. What I do begrudge is the self centered bull**** that argues "now that I got my benefit (i.e. my kids were able to go to the school) I shouldn't have to pay anything". The real point is, the value of their home is tied directly to the quality of the school systems. If they are so angered regarding their property taxes going to programs they can no longer directly beneift from, the obvious remedy is for them to cash out and take advantage of the increased home value and move to an over 55 community.

          Ogie

Sadly, my parents vote against the school budget in their town every year. I don't know if they did that when I was actually in the schools, but somehow I doubt it.

To be fair to them, that school district has developed a habit of spending tons of money on non-educational things (a fancy olypmic pool, a new football field - neither of which was in any way necessary). But still the general principle stands.

I deliberately chose to move into a town with fairly high property taxes b/c that town has a good school system. I now have a daughter, but at the time of the purchase I didn't and was not sure I would ever have kids. My house cost more/is worth more b/c of the schools. Also, let's be honest here: the towns that have good schools generally tend to have good other stuff as well.

I agree with you. I was calling the younger generation (like ozzy and ogly) whiners for saying the older generation is selfish.

I have plenty of money saved, especially after the military paid me. Money stopped being a problem for me years ago. Plus I only pay $320/month

                          • This is a place on sale a few blocks up... it's not exactly the same build/square footage as where I live but it gives you an idea of how much living space costs in Philly...

                            1,142 square feet, 3 bedroom, 1 bath* for $57,900 ($51/square foot)

I'm definitely getting a bargain playing only $320/month but you can usually rent out a whole house similar to this or the above for $800-$1000 or so and split it between 2-3 people. There's enough room.

*1 bath. Maybe that's why Kuci doesn't want to grow up. He can't live in a place with less than 6 bathrooms
