In Calgary, we pay the ~0.5% property tax, have no provincial sales tax (just 5% federal sales tax), pay provincial income tax (10% flat rate for everything above $16,825), then federal income tax.

Keep in mind this even includes health care...

We can keep the taxes low because we tax Americans indirectly by charging royalties for our energy resources (oil & natural gas). That's many billions of dollars of free money every year.

We also have massive urban parks (like Fish Creek Park at 13.2 km^2, Nose Hill Park which is 11 km^2) which still is part of the city. Not to mention the airport lands which are also part of the city which take up far more space than most airports because our runways are absurdly long due to our high elevation. We're building another 14,000 foot runway right now. YYC takes up 21.34 km^2.

Canadian municipal lines usually encompass most of their suburbs. American lines do not. Quick subtraction of Calgary's undeveloped land plus a small fudge factor for suburbia gets you directly to Calgary's density being ~30% lower.

There's a lot of specific circumstances that dramatically changes the density numbers which you were not aware of. Large urban parks, huge swaths of undeveloped land, etc. Calgary's seen a period of very explosive growth over the past 30 years, so it continually annexes massive areas of land at the city's fringes because there's nothing else out there anyway. As a result, the total area of the official city limits is always substantially higher than the real city.

What makes amalgamation of Canadian cities different from amalgamation of US cities besides that Calgary was founded and expanded more recently than Philly?

Besides these, there were a number of other outlying townships, villages and settlements throughout the county. Over time, as the population expanded out from the City of Philadelphia, those closer to the City of Philadelphia became absorbed in the congeries of towns of which greater Philadelphia was composed, while those further away from the city often joined with other townships, villages and settlements to form the newer counties of Berks and Montgomery.
