This planet and all of humanity could be destroyed tomorrow and the universe would continue on like nothing had happened. Humanity has no significance to anything beyond this planet, and this planet has no significance in the universe. Therefore, no individual human can ever achieve anything of significance as it will be confined to a planet that is just one of millions, and perhaps billions. Furthermore, since there is no after life, anything you do accomplish on this planet will be erased within a generation or two as those who knew you will die as well. Within a short period of time there will be nothing left to even prove that you ever even existed. At best you can hope that there is some record somewhere that says that you were once here, but even that will cease to exist in time as well. Some may live in word longer, but even they are confined to the reality that their memory will exist only as long as humanity does, and humanity won't exist forever. Therefore, the only thing preventing humanity from committing mass suicide at the understanding of their insignificance is a lack of options and human instinct to survive in order to hope for something better.

No, this doesn't bother me at all. Why should it?

However, what we do is more important than whether anyone remembers our name. Perhaps when I was younger I was vain enough to care about that but now I don't give a stuff. A humble, hard-working labourer who helps build a bridge will leave a legacy lasting generations, if not hundreds of years. Most people who do any kind of meaningful and useful job will contribute to the shape of history, however subtle and imperceptible.

For the non-theologically minded, the only meaning and purpose is survival.
