i, too, think that such a character would have a broad appeal

Only "50+" wpm? You shame us all.

Indeed. That's why I'm a proud Data Entry Specialist. My car has super MPG, my camera has wicked megapixel, and I have ultra WPM.

My daughter did this last year; stressed her out enormously during midterms, but she did finish.

I may give it a half-hearted try just to see if it gets the juices flowing. But it would have to come straight out of my Civ time...

That makes no sense. It stressed her out enormously and she had midterms but she still insisted on writing some silly novel due at the end of the month? That makes no sense. If she really wanted to write a novel, why not write it later. It would be probably come out better if she took her time.

Because sometimes the most difficult thing about writing is just getting yourself to sit down and do it. That's what NaNoWriMo helps you do - get the words on paper. December is for editing.

Some people take their commitments - even commitments to themselves - seriously.

Oh, and dissing my daughter is pretty low, even for you, Albert.

I dissed your daughter? Did anyone take it that way? What did I say? Why did you take it that way?

A commitment to write a silly story when more important issues are at stake (like college) and when you're stressed only because you're forcing yourself into this commitment, isn't a commitment worth keeping. Seriously. What's the point of writing a story in November? Why didn't she wait til winter break or the summer or something or write a little here and there when she had the time for it? It's so much more sensible and then she wouldn't have been stressed out. Am I missing something?

You said that what she did made no sense. Then followed it up by calling it silly. Nice save.

Granted I'm her father, but it reads like a diss to me.

Any semblance of people skills, for a start.

Now let's get back on topic.

It's a criticism. Not a very good one. But I wouldn't call it dissing.

However, I do want to say congrats to your daughter for pulling it off while doing midterms.

Diss/criticize = tomato/tomahto. He has no grounds for either. My point was to contribute something positive to the thread -- that NaNoWritMo is do-able even by busy college students. Don't know why Alby's running his mouth, but as the person quoted, I reserve the right to take offense.

Well I'm sorry you took it that way but it's not what was intended at all. And by silly I meant it's silly to constrain yourself by a month time-table to write something like that. I bet she could have written something better and without that stress she experienced if she wrote it on her own terms. Why constrain yourself by some month?

I just don't understand the whole premise of this thing. Let's all write a 50K word story (which itself is a silly requirement) in only 30 days because... because... I want to write a story but wait, I can do that whenever I want, not when some organization tells me to.

I've seen no one (not even their website) explain the purpose of this.
