  • You're right, mine is severe. So severe that when they took the x-ray several years ago the doctor decided to go show the other doctors because she hadn't seen one that bad before. It's also in one of the worst spots it can be since it's the third or fourth vertebrate from the bottom so it's taking the full weight of my upper half. I'd be required to go through basic training in the army. I have enough trouble walking let alone running around with 90 pounds on my back. I'm wondering if you even know what a herniated disc is.

Also, if you know so much about the Army and are so intimately familiar with it, why aren't you in it? Did you happen to fail somewhere along the way?

    • and yet you have no trouble playing tennis or 'bodybuilding'

      • Who said I play tennis? I haven't picked up a racket in 2 years. Teaching tennis just means standing on a court feeding a ball, and I can't even do that anymore. As far as bodybuilding goes, all the exercises I do can be done by someone in a wheel chair since I don't do anything that involves standing or vertical pressure. I only do 2 things that someone in a wheel chair can't do and that's the elliptical and shrugs. The shrugs I actually should not be doing and I have to be incredibly careful with them making sure to lean forward to keep pressure off the disc. If I stand up straight with them I could slip the disc. The elliptical I do because it's the only form of cardio I can do. I can't do walking or running. Even the elliptical can cause problems if I'm not careful. You really are stupid aren't you? Is there anything in your life that you do well?

Is there anything in your life that you can do?! Sounds like you can't do anything! How did your back problem happen? Is it permanent?

          • I can study and memorize vast quantities of information all from the comfort of a chair. As for the disc, it's permanent and won't ever heal without some form of surgery. I'm hoping there will be advances in back surgery over the next 10 years or so and in the meantime I'll continue to try to do what I can without making it worse.

As for how it happened, I like to break things and push things to their limit. After all, how can you truly understand something unless you know its limit? I had a really good kick serve because of that. For years I pushed it harder and harder every day, trying to bounce the ball over the fence. Probably somewhere around 14 years old is when the disc really deteriorated, and at 15 is when I had my first full disc slip. When it comes to physical endeavors, I don't really have restraint. I will probably develop knee issues as well. Actually I don't have restraint on anything I do. I have an emotional need to push it to its limit until I physically and mentally am no longer able to handle it. This back injury is probably the biggest regret I have in my entire life.

            • That sucks. But memorizing vast quantities of information won't get you anywhere. Do you actually think rote memorization is a useful life skill?

              • How isn't it? You're also assuming it's my only skill.

                • Why do you think rote memorization is particularly useful? Do you think the entire American pedagogy of the past 40+ years has been centered on rote memorization? There's a reason why that's not emphasized anymore in school. It's more useful to have critical reasoning skills than to be able to memorize crap.

If a company wants memorizers, they go to India.

                  • You're very selective in your replies. You're assuming that I'm going to somehow memorize something and then not know what to do with it. Don't get mad at me because you aren't able to memorize things. There's a reason why I talk down to you Al B, and it's not because of anything I've said on here.

Factually incorrect. Enlisted voting preferences mirror the American public as a whole. Officer preferences have a slight Republican-lean but not significantly so.
