  • Had my first experience with Brasilian robbers tonight

i was quite drunk and walking back from lapa to central to catch a van home, as i walked by praca da republica two guys come up from behind and started walking alongside and talking to me. i knew what was coming and i prepared myself while talking bull**** to them. the bigger guy then puts his arm around me and then suddenly the smaller guy (it's worth saying at this point that they were both bigger than me, but when you're 5'8" and built like **** all, that's not saying much) tries to put his hands in my pockets. i elbowed the bigger guy and tried to punch the smaller one. a fight ensued, and while it wasn't exactly a jackie chan scene, i held my own. i managed to put the head in on the bigger guy but didn't connect properly and i don't think i broke his nose. fortunately some people were nearby and they started shouting and coming over to intervene, at which point the two thieving c*nts decided to do a runner. they got nothing.

i was quite lucky to be honest, because if it hadn't been for my tight jeans and the people nearby they would've kicked my arse and taken my R$10 and **** phone. i was a bit concerned they might have been armed but after it became clear they weren't i went all out on them. mother****ers. having looked in the mirror i'm quite pleased, no cuts or bruises, a little bit of redness where one of them caught me with a punch, but it could've been a lot worse.

next time i think i'll wait for the metro...

Capsicum spray. Keep it in your handbag.
    And take to wearing heels.

They didn't even have a weapon?

Were they children, Cockney? It's alright. I was once mugged by teenagers. There were over a dozen of them though and they jumped me. I'm not ashamed to admit that at age 18 I was mugged by 14 year olds only because there were a lot of them and there was really nothing I could do. I probably should have ran but I was feeling manly at 18 and decided to take them on.

I've been robbed (successfully for the muggers) 5 times, 3 times at gunpoint (once even gun to my head style), one time by those teenagers, and once by two guys, one of whom grabbed me from behind pining my arms to my side while the other one pummeled me with punches to the face. I've also been nearly robbed two more times but got away... once, they chased me several blocks, the other time, they pulled out the gun (so I suppose I've been robbed more than 3 times at gunpoint but I got away this time), but I booked it away as soon as I saw the weapon.

If you're going to walk around in ****ty places with criminals in it then don't get drunk. Remember they're looking for targets of opportunity so if you don't look like an easy mark then they'll likely just skip over you.

Oerdin, he's a pasty Englishman in Brazil. He will always be an easy mark.

It's like me being white in the hood. I know that's why I've been robbed so much.

no they weren't children albert, did you see the part where i said both were bigger than me. they weren't old though, i'd say early 20s if i had to guess.

i was also surprised by their lack of a weapon and general ineptness as robbers and at fighting. from stories my friends have told, robbers here tend to be quite efficient, so i got lucky.

Yeah but you also described yourself as a midget... they could've been teenagers. I was 6 foot as a teen.

The key is to note pairs or more. Muggers will never rob a man alone even if he has a gun. It doesn't make sense for them. So always be on the look-out for 2 or more young males with their hands in their pockets. Note their movement patterns. The two times I got away, I was walking on the other side of the street from them and they crossed in the middle of the street diagonally to meet me. The time they pulled out the gun and said "Don't run", I ran past them as my house was half a block away. The other time, I promptly turned around and went around the corner, with them following me. They split up, one on my side of the street, the other on the other side and followed me about a block til I heard the patter of feet running and I simply out-ran them.

Another time, I was waiting for the bus less than 45 feet from a Rite Aide truck that was unloading merchandise into the store (yes, there were 5 guys working right there). They came from behind me, one put his arm around my shoulder and showed the gun, saying "You know what this is. Come with me" out of sight of the workers where they robbed me even of the shirt on my back. They also took my knife Didn't do me much good against a gun.

While I was getting robbed, this was at a corner, so cars passed by. One car even stopped at the red light, looked at us and the gun, shook his head, and drove off. Another time when I was robbed, there was a couple who witnessed the entire thing a few feet away sitting on their front steps and a squadcar with a cop in it literally on the next block HOW CAN PEOPLE WATCH SOMETHING LIKE THIS AND DO NOTHING?

Also, the time I was robbed near the Rite Aide truck, when they got away and I ran to ask one of the workers if I could use their phone to call the police, they wouldn't let me! They thought it was a trick and after much pleading and swearing that I was just robbed, the guy called the cops himself. The cops were nearby because they showed up in less than 1 minute from the call!

Holy **** cops suck. How can they always be so close but not there when you need them!

It's interesting to note the whole not helping a victim of a crime thing... I once was in a car when I witnessed a man being beaten to the ground by a group of men on a major street (Broad Street). I didn't hesitate to call the cops although I didn't exactly stick around to see what happened either.

I know a guy who when he was 15 or so, he told me a story of how he was walking to school when he saw some teenage girl being grabbed and taken into a car the whole time screaming and fighting. He told me days after the incident but said nothing to anybody when it happened.

**** that snitches get stitches ****. You would want someone to do something if you a victim of a crime.

Unfortunately, you can't help too much. I briefly worked with a guy who was walking with his wife when they witnessed a man raping a woman in an alley. He intervened and was shot to death. We had no idea why he didn't show up to work the next day until we read the papers. I didn't know him well or anything but you hate to hear that a guy died doing something heroic like that.

yeah usually i'm pretty good at noting suspicious characters, but they just came from behind and moved into positions which made it difficult to get away and then started talking. i knew what was going to happen so i had the time to think about the best way to tackle them both. their robbing technique was rubbish though, they just tried to stick their hands in my pockets, which gave me the opportunity to swing my fists first and gain the upper hand temporarily.

sucks though, doesn't it albert. even though they got nothing i'm still pretty pissed off at those thieving c*nts.
