But I still think it's pretty icky.

KH won't read what I've said, and pretends I've said things other than I have instead so he can have something to argue with. /shrug.
I won't read everything you've written because your posts are generally inflated (lengthwise) and vacuous.
KH is the one making assumptions about what an employee here is worth without understanding the market conditions. As for myself, I pay my workers what I feel benefits the business most
Funny, because what I originally quoted was this:
HC, this is not the zero sum game you are pretending it is. If I pay my worker an extra $ a day, I neither create or destroy value unless I presuppose that I am better able to use that $ than my worker or vice versa.
Which is, as previously stated, utter nonsense. You're making some kind of marginal utility argument based on excess wages being a pure transfer. I've demonstrated that excess wages destroy welfare because they represent a rent (and rents are dissipated through rent-seeking behavior when the rent is associated with an activity with non-zero elasticity).
Either defend this claim or admit it was mistaken.
I have no problem with you paying more than prevailing wages for unskilled labor if you believe it confers some sort of advantage to your profitability. This is NOT what you claimed in the above quote.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

You are reading too much into "extra". I simply mean it as more [than the market], as in HC's post[s] I was responding to. Here it is again:
"What I just explained was that the third option, paying them more, makes things worse."
You've ignored all subsequent statments of mine as to why I feel justified in paying that "extra". It is simply not a zero sum game that HC is talking about. There are justifiable reasons for paying them more... and doing so does not make things worse... it makes things better.
For example, I don't have to have a prison style fence with armed guards around my farm. Seems a little more efficient that way...

I want to pay more than the competition. Treat them well. Let them expand. I want people to want to be there. What's the motivation to do a good job when you're little more than slave labor?
Make it where people want to stay, want to do good work, so that they can stay. If you treat the help well, it's worth it. You have a better choice of applicants.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

At one farm I visited here, I saw a worker take at least 15 minutes digging a hole for a transplanted vegetable. During part of that time the foreman was standing there, happily talking to me, a competitor, about where to purchase drip tube. It was the most efficient farm on the island I had seen, because of modern equipment. Their yields and quality of produce still sucked though. It's been bulldozed (at least most of it) recently. So I guess I should try to duplicate their business model?
The workers at our farm transplanted about 1000 pechay each the other day. Among other things.

Just saying, but I don't think anything you described is a counterpoint to anything I have said.

Did I say Filipino farmers were better economist than economists? No. I said economist themselves aren't very good economist - which is pretty easy to see given how ****ty their predictions are.
Of course, you are one of the folks that probably follows all those economists who predicted months ago that high federal deficits would lead to inflation and higher yields on US treasuries as Bond vigilantes went after the US. How are those predictions working out? Oh, and weren't these the same geniuses that claimed that there was no housing bubble? No, those were the heads of some of the major Banks....
