I'll never forget Pekka's "cold hands" thread where he was getting frisky with a girl in the back of his car and she went to give him a handjob with her icy cold Finnish hands.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

So anyways, I'm going back to the hospital, just came home for a quick visit and get some more stuff. She's amazing. This little bundle, yesterday she had her eyes open all the time and she was looking straight at us, not even flinching. When I moved my head, she would follow and keep staring at me. She doesn't cry much, at least not yet. She just eats and sleeps pretty much, and when she is awake for the few moments she is, she just stares at us. We're very happy and still tired.
Thanks everyone, I'm glad for all the best wishes, I haven't had time to read them all yet. I read them when I get back.
See you in the baby cute fest later on!In da butt.

Congrats, Pekka. I hope you're getting some sleep.

Arrian beat me to it. Congrats, there is no other feeling like it in the world (daughter that is not necessarily sleep). As for sleep, plan on getting some in about 3 years. Mine haven't hit the teen years yet, but when they do I suppose it will mean the return of sleepless nights. In any event, best wishes to you and your family."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

It all depends. I've been quite lucky. My daughter is just a good sleeper. She started sleeping through the night at ~4 months old (and if you adjust for her being a premie, that's like 2.5 months old). She routinely sleeps from 8pm to 7am now (she's now 8+ months old). Birth to 4 months was pretty rough, though.
Most people don't get that lucky, I gather (as a friend put it "mine didn't come with that feature"). Every kid is different - sometimes wildly so (or so it seems to you, the parent).

The adjustment period was the worst. The first three months you think will never end. You get through it (with team work) and never regret it. Once they can handle and start transitioning to food that takes longer to digest (and thus keeps their stomachs full through the night) they seem to sleep much better. Key is whether they can handle the food. Colick(sp?) is killer."Just puttin on the foil" - Jeff Hanson

Congratulations
despite the sleep advice, please try to keep to mother's milk for the 1st 6 months.“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

I think the standard thing is 6 months of mommy milk (up to 12 if one can), with the start of solid foods in the 4-6 month area, depending on your child.
Amelia got to 5 months on pure mommy milk (with the exception of a little bit of formula when she was in the NICU), then a bit of both milk/formula, then solids coming in around 6-7 months. Still some mommy milk now, more formula, and solids. Single-grain cereals first, then squash, apple, peas and just this week, sweet potatoes.
