Hey let's get real here... musicals are modern day operas
What's the distinction between musicals and opera, Boris?"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

That phantom guy isn't a good singer at all. Really, he sounds like some guy off of a church choir or something. I think you could take a guy off the street and get him to sing like that."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

This is the autumn (fall) selection at the WMC:
Fidelio – Beethoven’s only opera
The Magic Flute – Mozart
Ariadne auf Naxos – R. Strauss
Which would you recommend and why?

I believe the principal distinction is that pretty much all the parts in opera are sung, not spoken. Also, more classical styling. I'm not a big fan of opera, but then I've never seen or heard it, really, and I can respect it. I cannot and will not respect musicals, largely because of the sudden, jarring breaks between spoken parts and songs. Also, all the musical bits I've heard have been frothy little pop-trash earworms. Very interesting, Boris. And I was under the impression that Carmen wasn't well regarded by opera buffs. When Nietzsche claimed that he preferred Bizet to Wagner, some of his Wagnerian buddies assumed he was kidding.Let us be lazy in everything, except in loving and drinking, except in being lazy – Lessing
