What is your favourite landmark in the city in which you live?
Not sure we have any landmarks to speak of, but we do have a dock which is on the world heritage list...

one thing i love about rio is the complete lack of planning controls (or at least if there are then no one takes them seriously). it's great to walk down a street where every building is completely different, where every house, office or shop has a real individuality about it. added to the look of decaying beauty you see everywhere here, it's wonderful chaos.

I saw this place on a highly entertaining show called Man Vs Food!
They do weddings as well. A couple I know got married there, it was pretty fun.
Also on Man v. Food, he went to Salvador Mali's and did the Habanero Fritter challenge. I sampled one of them and it just about killed me, and I have a decent tolerance for spicy food. Five plus the habanero salsa? Never.
Both Portlands are pretty nice. Loved Oregon, for the natural beauty, the arts scene, the clean air and the restaurants - oh, and the hippies. Lots of them. Terrible town for driving, but loved everything else.

What was so bad about the driving? Portland is generally acknowledged as a model of urban planning. Compared to almost any other U.S. city I've been in, the traffic is extremely easy to deal with.
Not the traffic per se; just some poorly marked turn-offs for the most part. And when you miss one, it can be hell to get back to where you want to go.
But I was a stranger in town, so must bear some of the culpability.
Oh yeah, and the beer.

Parliament House, with Old Parliament House in front of it. PH replaced an existing hill, and blends nicely with the landscape while still managing to be fairly majestic:
The Australian War Memorial:
Telstra Tower, which is actually in the middle of Canberra, so this illustrates why Canberra's called "The Bush Capital". It's one of those "Ah, I'm home" landmarks visible from a fair distance as one approaches the city.

I know Provost was a bit pudgy in the past - but replacing an entire hill!?
And I don't think anyone could ever describe him as blending in (apart from in a heap in a doorway) or being majestic...
Canberra is a very nice place and it is a great feeling of being able to walk all over parliament. The Australian memorial is also very beautiful and grand, and one of my favourite memories of Canberra is the view back across the city and all its lakes from the Black Mountain Tower (Telstra Tower)...
Also freaking amazing: the Japenese Garden, and the Rose Garden. And that donut shop that sells Tang-flavored donuts. And Powell's, obviously.
You forgot to mention the beer. I do like Powell's and it is sad to see so many independent book stores going out of business. Hopefully Powell's hangs in there.
