About being called Dutch in English, I have no idea. "Dutch" sounding like our word for German ("Duits") makes me wonder though. In our national anthem there is a frase about our German blood. "Ben ik van Dietschen bloed." William of Orange (the guy that started the independance war against Spain) was German, maybe that has something to do with it

Remember that there was no 'deutschland' (germany) back then.

In our local language it has disappeared, but it remains in english: 'dutch'. It certainly doesn't refer to 'deutch', though it's most probably true that 'deutch' also is somehow related to this 'dietsch'. We share a lot with our neighbours. So much that they even considered us to be 'ariers' as well during the 2nd world war.

Being that the Cymry were descended from the Iberian Peninsula, it is only natural that Spain should have won!

Spain was the better team, but apart from the 2 major fauls by Van Bommel and De Jong in the early 10 minutes, the dutch did not play more unfair then the spanish. It was enough though to get the referees against the dutch. It was embarrashing how they destroyed the entire game by stopping the game for every non issue. (while not giving a penalty to Robben for a clear fault) (and missing a 100% corner, after which the spanish goal was scored) (let me not start about the offside for the spanish goal).

Anyway, the Spanish team was the better team, they deserved the win.
And do not blame Holland for being not as fair as they used to be. In the past Holland always played the most fair and beautiful football, only to be beated out by unfair teams like Portugal 4 years ago. I'm glad that we made a little attitude change, apparently the FIFA doesn't stand up for fair and nice playing teams, well, then there's no other option but being a bit unfair yourself now and then. It's up to the FIFA to improve the rules and their referee system.

it was offside, not when he received the ball when he made the goal, but 10secs earlier, when he got the ball then, passed it back, then got it again and scored. not to mention that the spanish goal started with denying a 100prct full in your face corner to Holland. spain was the best, they deserved the cup, but the referee played against holland. we are partly to blame for that ourselves, b/c of the 2 early huge faults of De Jong and Van Bommel, but it was clearly the case. not to mention the denial of a 100prct penalty to Robben.

This was the worst Netherlands performance I have ever seen. Period. If the ref was not "pro" Dutch in the first half both Van Bommel (treelogger), and De Jong would be out... Heitinga in the second half too... so I'd like to see you play against Spain with 9 or 8 men, with a "fair" ref... praise him rather for letting you play as dirty as I have never seen you ( of for that matter, almost anyone except Italians) play... so that you staid in the game until 116 minute, and even had some chances before.

Dutch complaining about the ref in the final is spending all the good karma Cruyff, Van Basten, Bergkamp and co earned you over last 30 years, and quick.
