The separate results for both the South American and North American teams are listed, ******. Both continents sent a much higher percentage of their World Cup qualifying teams into the knockout round than Europe did.
    ...and you bolded this.

Percentage of North and South American teams qualifying for the second round: 87.
you disingenuous little imbecile. that's the thing about the internet drake, everyone can see what you write (or bold).

so 66% of the CONCACAF sides qualified, which leaving aside the fact it's a very small sample size, comes back to my original post which stated that there are only two good teams in CONCACAF, which i notice you don't dispute.

It was bolded in the original blog post. I was simply replicating their emphasis.

Oceana only had two teams capable of stringing two passes together, and one of those has left in disgust.

On the face of it, the 40% looks high, but it is proportionately lower than South America in terms of number_of_entries/total_countries_in_region.

Admittedly, The Vatican doesn't have a football team, but if it did ....

Both Australia and New Zealand scored more points in group play than France and Italy, and as many points as Greece, Serbia, and Denmark. Clearly, they deserved to be at the World Cup as much as 38% of the European entrants...

So you think Europe should be rewarded for being riven by ethnic hatreds and divided into an absurd amount of irrelevant little countries?

                • I'd have thought the experience of Mexico 86 was not something Canada would wish to repeat.

                  • That vast majority of Canadians can't even tell you what that reference means (myself included). We just don't care about the game.

                        • I know you don't care, which is fine, but one day Canada is going to win the World Cup. It says so here...

The last — and first and only — time the country actually participated in the beautiful game’s big fiesta was in Mexico in 1986, when a crew of plucky Canucks lost three games while failing to score a single goal.

“Canada is going to catch up rapidly in soccer because you are in an easy Confederation to qualify for the World Cup,” Mr. Kuper says from Johannesburg. “Pretty soon, Canada will put some of its financial might and size, in terms of inhabitants, into the game and get much better — because you can’t get any worse.”

                          • Yeah right.

You clipped the most important line:

Our hockey-crazed nation failed to qualify for the World Cup. Again.

Aside from recent immigrants to the big cities we really don't care. We have a far better game to occupy our time and interest.

                              • Yeah, you can smoke a cigarette waiting for the play.

This point from the article is also dead wrong:

Canada is rich, multicultural and full of soccer-loving hosers, some of whom own companies who will begin investing in the sport.

Don't hold your breath waiting for it.
