Yeah, it is the population pillar mentioned in the article Cort posted. According to that article we have 2+ million soccer players in this country. It fails to neglect the overwhelming majority are little kids. Adult leagues are moribund.

Using the factor of 10 the US should have 20+million players (possibly more).

People seem to care more about the percentage of a country who are fans, not the number. I bet we have more people in the US who are following the World Cup than in many more soccer-centric countries. A small minority of Americans are still more than entire countries like Slovenia and Serbia, etc.
