                • There have been both good matches and a few excellent goals in South Africa. I was considering starting a poll about it later, but the better half of the matches still remains to be played. Besides even the ones plagued by mistakes and car horns or ruined by refs can be interesting, not always as sport but as train wrecks. I'm sure Green's blunder guaranteed countless hours of agonizing hilarity. Italy's adventures in Korea were the best thing that could happen at the time for those of us with no horse in the race, and a sense of humor. The "negatives" have been as much a part of the world cup spectacle all throughout its history and have to be accepted as they come lest you go crazy.

Really problems only appear when people waltz in naively expecting things to live up to some ideal of slick sport-entertainment that you can enjoy from a distance and then walk away from unperturbed when it's over and we may not have won but at least we lost fair and square. That's just not realistic. The world cup is dirty, corrupt, cynical, bitter and full of incompetence at all levels, but so is the world itself, and if you can't enjoy it if only as tragicomedy then it's your loss. Some people simply don't have the stomach for it.

The game isn't broken at all although the organization that runs the world cup probably is.

The game is broken by the people enforcing the rules at all levels. Phantom penalties, uncalled penalties. There is no uniformity at all and it hurts the integrity of the game.
