Actually, here's an interesting idea somebody said a few pages back... what if the soccer field were smaller? Can anyone speak on how a smaller field might effect the game (maybe making it more sprint-centric and keeping the ball in play longer because of greater player density on the smaller field)? I mean currently, they have more square footage than American football fields and dwarf basketball courts and hockey rinks.

I played in some indoor soccer leagues on much smaller 'fields' (courts) with boards. It was far better than the big outdoor games, IMO. Higher scoring, faster pace. More like hockey. Adds nice boardplay dynamics.

Yeah, I also played that variant for a few years when I lived in California. I was trying to think of the name...but foosball kept popping in my head instead of Futsal.

I'm not real clear on what you've figured. I think futsal is pretty exciting but tactically lacking. A lot of the techniques are perfectly applicable to soccer, but too much fancy juggling and dribbling slows down the game in soccer where tempo and speed over large areas are really important. You're also more dependent on teamwork seeing as how you're 11-a-side versus only 5 in futsal.

Futsal is usually stereotyped as being played by footballers who couldn't make it, and it's probably true to a great extent, but it should be recognized for its own virtues and growing popularity. It has international championships, leagues and stars of its own. Still I suppose one of the most popular topics of conversation among futsallers must be who if any could have made it on a high level of soccer.

If you have ten minutes watch this clip of a meeting between soccer star Robinho and futsal star Falcao. It shows off a lot of neat moves and touches on the role of futsal in relation to soccer. It probably helps the soccer is for the poor argument too, so that's cool.
