The reason "football" is so popular is it necessarily because it is the best sport, but because it is the most simple sport. All you need is a ball. For this reason, more people can play it.
Ice Hockey is a far better sport in every way, but as you say...it is niche. You need a winter climate or expensive arenas, and to play it properly you need expensive equipment. Sure, you can play shinny with just a pair of skates, a stick, and a puck (still kinda expensive compared to soccer), but it can never replace a sport that requires virtually nothing.
i don't disagree with this (well except the better sport part ) or what wezil said in fact, but i would argue that the simplicity is part of football's brilliance.
also, in addition to what albert said about basketball, if it comes down to it, it would be easy enough play baseball or american football with very little equipment. all you need for the former is a bat, a ball and some things to mark out bases and for the latter just a funny shaped ball. so following the logic used by people here, if these games were as good, they'd be as popular with poor kids worldwide. the simple truth is that these kids are not inclined to play them, they'd rather play football.
drake, that's exactly the sort of retarded reasoning i expect from you.

The reason baseball isn't everywhere in Europe is football was already entrenched, aqnd the British spread it long ago. It's already established, as crap as it is. It's all you guys know and are used to.
Plus, Baseball is even more dull than Football.
Basketball is fun just to shoot hoops with friends, it's ****ing awful to watch.

Yes, but all the people with money play cricket. Soccer in England is the domain of poor chavs like Wayne Rooney.
cricket AND polo

Granted, street ball is more about show than anything else but you got to admit those were some flashy moves. Tossing the ball behind the defender's back... bouncing the ball off the defender's head... rolling on the ground as you dribble... diving between the defender's legs... pretty cool to watch.

Actually if you consider the long history of the Harlem Globetrotters and how the ABA was, showmanship has always been a big part of basketball, more so than the other sports.

Bugs, are those seriously supposed to be highlights?
Most of them are ancient and not even very interesting?

I'm disappointed if that was really Pele's greatest ball trick as claimed by the video. Even I know who Pele is so he has to be like the Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzsky of soccer and that wasn't much of a trick. All he did was a misdirection move (similar in some ways to a basketball crossover). I would think that would be much more common in soccer. Matter fact, one would think if soccer were exciting, such moves would be the standard way to get around a defender.
Really, watch the And-1 mixtape I posted with the transformers beat () and honestly compare. And those guy are all amateurs (I think only 1 And-1 baller is in the NBA [skip2mylou/Rafer Alston] and he's hardly a star)
