      • Just saw on CNN several minutes ago about BP employees who said they suffered retaliation from their superiors for reporting safety concerns.

        • So does anyone have any thoughts on that?

          • I hope it's not a surprise to anyone.

There's always retaliation in any business for telling executives what they don't want to hear.

            • So then what's the point of implementing safety standards within a company?

              • To set guidelines that should be followed.

I'm not saying it's a good thing, just not unexpected. It happens everywhere. It happens in government, too. There are guidelines, but then there are deadlines...

                • It's not unexpected, but this is still a serious concern that should be addressed.

                  • How would you address it?

Unless you can change human nature, good luck.

You'd think there are already regulations in place with OSHA for issues like this, right?

So maybe one of the problems is that OSHA is not enforcing work and industry safety vigorously enough.

                      • The "problem" is that the OSHA can't possibly regulate and actively monitor every project all the time.

It's a "real world" problem that I'm continuing to try to acquaint you with.

                        • So then what would you suggest for the problem of companies firing employees who report safety concerns or violations?

                          • Make fines massive so there is more incentive for management to ensure all the regulations are followed. Maybe tie to it a threat to revoke the license to operate.

If BP was faced with the prospect of losing a drilling license, they'd probably be more careful.

Most of the states in Australia have introduced very tough OHS&E (Occupational Health and Safety and Environment) laws that effectively mean that if an incident can be directly linked to an individual's neglect of legislation (and this can include the CEO if they have failed to implement educate as to the purpose of and encourage the adherence to workplace policies) then they can not only be fined very large amounts, but gaoled.

Workplace safety culture has changed dramatically as a result. It is taken very seriously at all levels of large organisations where CEO's run a big risk of something happening to someone. Environmental safety culture not so much.

Add this to the nanny state list.
